The late, legendary Glen Campbell recorded the Wichita Lineman in 1968. Written by Jimmy Webb, he found inspiration for the song after traveling southwestern Oklahoma. He noticed the endless stretch of telephone poles in that rural corridor of the country, and atop a pole in the distance setting sun, sat a singular lineman. The experience encouraged Webb to put himself in the shoes of this lonely, blue-collar worker and imagine what it was like to oftentimes work off-hours and siloed from company. The song depicts a loss for love that the lineman recognizes as he sits atop his post, wondering what could be.
The hit went on to #3 in the United State pop chart, #1 in the US country music chart, top 10 rankings in international markets, and also earning top 200 status for greatest songs ever recorded by Rolling Stones magazine. The myriad of accolades unveils a truth 50 years ago and also today in American culture: appreciation for low-marketed, physically arduous jobs. As the refrain goes in this poetic tribute, "And the Wichita lineman is still on the line".
We tip our hats to the lineman of the world for the work they do to keep us connected. We are a few weeks late for National Lineman Appreciation Day but are undoubtedly grateful. You can watch Glen Campbell play this song on a live set at this link.
