The Father of The Lead-Acid Battery

Happy Birthday to Gaston Plante

The first iteration of lead acid batteries was brought about by Gaston Plante in 1859. Today, we honor him on his birthday for his contributions to electrochemistry. This invention was the first to utilize the ability to alternately charge and discharge a battery - previously batteries could only be used for their natural charge created by the materials used, but not recharged. This led to innovation in both industrial and consumer applications. Plante would go on to also invent the Rheostatic Machine, an early predecessor of the Marx Generator, which provides tests of high voltage equipment.

Commerical production of these batteries did not occur until the turn of the century through the advent of mass-scale vehicle production. It is humbling that another century later lead-acid battery technology is still so crucial to our daily lives, and that we can continue to improve on their performance. Servato's adaptive charging is just  one such recent advance. Innovative thinkers like Plante will continue to spur new technologies associated with these batteries, and it is hard to imagine that Servato's technology will not be at the forefront of it all.
